A Fighter All The Way Returns to the Conversation with a Story of Grit, Humour and Hope

A Fighter All The Way follows John Rogers from a difficult and unstable childhood through to a full and eventful adult life. Born in 1943, John never knew his father and saw very little of his mother. He was moved between children's homes and institutions from an early age. He came under the supervision of a series of welfare authorities during his childhood.

The book goes on to describe how John's teenage years and young adulthood were shaped by these early experiences. It also covers his time in the British Army and the Merchant Navy, his later life running a successful business in Cornwall, and his final years, when he was living with both Parkinson's disease and terminal prostate cancer.

The book also includes part of the story of his wife, Christine Rogers, including the loss of her father in Cyprus in 1958.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀

John Rogers spent part of his childhood in care, where he experienced abuse. As a young man, he became involved in crime, working as what was then known as a safe-blower and carrying out work connected to the Kray twins in London's East End. He later served time for these activities.

His life changed direction when he joined the British Army's Parachute Regiment and later the Merchant Navy. In 1984, after settling in Cornwall, he founded a flat-roofing business that grew from a small, kitchen-table operation into a well-established company. He later became President of the Redruth Chamber of Commerce. He took part in many charity fundraising challenges, including the Dartmoor Jailbreak. He raised significant amounts for good causes over the years.

John died on 20 September 2013, three years after being diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. He saw the finished book before his death, something his daughter has described as an important milestone for him.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿

Marion Christina Rogers was born in Harrow in 1975 and is the only daughter of John and Christine Rogers. She previously worked at Cornwall's local studies library and later as a Senior Archive Assistant at Cornwall Record Office, where she gained practical experience in family and historical research. In 1999, she joined the flat-roofing business her father had founded, where she now works as Office Manager.

Marion began recording her father's memories after his cancer diagnosis in 2010, initially intending to preserve them for the family. As her research developed, she came to believe his story would interest a much wider readership. Since the book's publication, she has also become involved in supporting survivors of childhood abuse in care, through contact made during her research.

Marion lives in Cornwall with her long-term partner, Rob. A Fighter All The Way is her first book.
