Moscow Summons Armenia Envoy Amid Rising Tensions Over EU Closer Ties
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Ambassador Sergey Kopyrkin was summoned for discussions following actions by Armenia’s leadership that Moscow believes are negatively affecting cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
"Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin has been called to Moscow for consultations in connection with steps by the Armenian leadership aimed at rapprochement with the EU that are causing damage to interaction within the EAEU," the ministry said.
The decision reflects increasing friction between the two countries as Armenia continues to pursue a closer relationship with the EU.
Earlier this year, Armenian officials reiterated their commitment to expanding engagement with the European bloc. According to reports, Russian authorities responded by cautioning that deeper integration with the EU could threaten Armenia’s role in the EAEU and potentially result in the loss of various economic advantages linked to membership.
The ambassador’s recall is the latest indication of worsening relations between Moscow and Yerevan, long regarded as close partners since the breakup of the Soviet Union.
