EU Condemns Threats to Iran’s Civilian Infrastructure

(MENAFN) The European Union rejected threats to target Iran’s civilian infrastructure, cautioning that such actions could affect millions and dangerously escalate tensions in the region, according to reports.

“We have always said that diplomacy is the answer,” EU Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper told reporters during a midday briefing on Tuesday.

Hipper added, “From our side, we reject any threats ... (of) attacks regarding critical civilian infrastructure, such attacks risk impacting millions of people across the Middle East and beyond, and also may lead to further dangerous escalation.”

She reiterated the EU’s call for “maximum restraint,” stressing the importance of protecting civilians and infrastructure, and urging all parties to abide by international law and humanitarian principles.

The remarks came amid warnings from US President Donald Trump that American forces could strike Iranian bridges and power plants if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz by Tuesday night at 8 pm EDT (0000GMT Wednesday).

Tensions in the region have persisted since a US-Israeli offensive on Feb. 28, which reportedly killed more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, though Iranian authorities have not provided recent updates.
