EU Faces Risks from Dependence on US Payment Systems

(MENAFN) Europe’s heavy reliance on American-controlled financial networks leaves the bloc vulnerable to political influence and potential economic disruption, the chair of the European Parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee cautioned on Wednesday.

"I must admit that I am concerned when I hear the president's speech," Aurore Lalucq remarked, referencing comments made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Lalucq argued that crucial weaknesses were being ignored, stressing that digital infrastructure and payment systems were missing from the broader debate.
"But that is where our fragility lies today," she explained. "Almost all of our payment systems today are American."

She warned that US President Donald Trump could abruptly sever Europe’s access to those systems.

"Donald Trump can cut them off overnight. He has already done so," Lalucq noted, pointing to earlier pressure applied on International Criminal Court judges and rule of law.

Calling for swift measures, Lalucq said she had submitted a “very specific request” to the European Commission.

"I urgently request that you organize a meeting in the coming weeks, next week, to create an Airbus of payment systems," she urged, adding that such an initiative would not be expensive.
