EU suspends work on trade agreement with US— parliament trade chief

(MENAFN) The European Union has suspended progress on its trade agreement with the United States, the chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee announced Wednesday, according to reports.

"Now official: EU-US deal is on hold until further notice!" Bernd Lange wrote on a US-based social media platform. He explained that the European Parliament trade committee has paused its work on the legal implementation of the Turnberry deal, citing concerns over sovereignty and territorial integrity. "Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are at stake. Business as usual impossible," he added, referring to ongoing tensions surrounding Greenland and threatened tariffs.

It remains uncertain whether the suspension affects the entire trade agreement or only aspects of it, while certain provisions that had already been implemented may continue to apply. The preliminary deal, reached in July, included 15% tariffs on EU goods shipped to the US, with large portions already put into effect before the agreement was formally signed.
