EU donates USD2.3M to back communities affected by war in DR Congo
According to a statement from the EU Delegation in Congo, the funding will deliver life-saving aid to thousands of people in urgent need, amid rising violence and increasing humanitarian challenges in Uvira, Fizi, and Kalehe. The initiative, set to run until the end of June 2026, will particularly target internally displaced populations in the most affected areas.
The assistance will complement the work of partners on the ground, focusing on cash support, protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions. The ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, exacerbated by the activities of the rebel group M23—which controls key territories including Goma and Bukavu—has displaced roughly 500,000 people, with over 90,000 fleeing to neighboring Burundi.
Regional tensions persist, with the UN and Kinshasa accusing Rwanda of backing M23, a claim that Kigali denies.
