EU, UK agree to advance key trade talks

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Wednesday that she had a “good call” with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasizing their shared commitment to advancing the EU-UK agenda.

Von der Leyen stated that they reviewed recent progress and agreed to begin negotiations next week on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures and Emissions Trading Systems (ETS) agreements.

She added that discussions are also ongoing regarding the UK’s possible participation in the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument, a financial tool offering up to €150 billion ($174 billion) in loans for defense investments, aiming for “a mutually beneficial outcome.”

“I look forward to seeing the prime minister at the G20 next week,” she said.
