Ankara dismisses report by EU Commission, labeling it as biased

(MENAFN) Türkiye on Tuesday dismissed the latest European Commission report, describing it as “biased” and containing unfounded claims about its judiciary, fundamental rights, and domestic politics.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the report’s comments contradict efforts to maintain a positive Türkiye-EU agenda and employ language contrary to the long-term interests of both sides. It emphasized that Ankara remains committed to EU accession, pointing to its alignment with EU standards and adherence to a functioning market economy and sound macroeconomic policies.

The ministry welcomed the report’s acknowledgment of Türkiye’s constructive role in the Eastern Mediterranean, improved relations with Greece, and active dialogue with the EU. Based on these developments, it reiterated the expectation that the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council decisions from July 15, 2019, be repealed.

Ankara also praised references to its multi-layered foreign policy, strategic partnerships, and contributions to regional peace and stability, as well as the report’s recognition of Türkiye’s importance to the EU in addressing regional and global challenges. The ministry stressed the need for effective functioning of partnership bodies and active inclusion of Türkiye in EU defense and security initiatives.

However, the ministry criticized the report for reflecting “unrealistic, unlawful, and maximalist views” of Greece and the Greek Cypriot side, while overlooking Türkiye’s and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s legitimate concerns, highlighting perceived EU bias on the Cyprus issue.

Türkiye urged the EU to follow the principle of pacta sunt servanda, adopt a neutral stance, and avoid policies that stall relations or leave them hostage to bilateral disputes. Ankara emphasized that deeper, trust-based cooperation serves the interests of both Türkiye and Europe and pledged to continue working with determination, expecting the EU to demonstrate similar strategic resolve.
