Moldovan leader pleased by EU for acknowledging nation progress

(MENAFN) Moldovan President Maia Sandu expressed gratitude to the European Commission for recognizing her country’s advancements in its EU accession process, as the bloc published a report evaluating the progress of its enlargement partners.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos described 2025 as a “good year for our work with candidate countries” during a presentation at the European Parliament, highlighting notable progress made by Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine in their path toward EU membership.

Kos also stated on the social media platform X that Moldova achieved the “biggest progress on its accession path,” emphasizing that the country had strengthened cooperation with the EU despite facing persistent hybrid threats and attempts to undermine its European trajectory.

“Thank you for recognising our progress, @EU_Commission. Moldova has shown that even in the hardest times, Moldova delivers — and that the European Union can count on us,” Sandu wrote on X in response to Kos’ remarks.

The Moldovan president made these comments during a working visit to Brussels, where she described her meeting with European Council President Antonio Costa as “productive.”

During her visit, Sandu is also scheduled to meet with Kos, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, and other senior European officials, in addition to participating in a conference, according to a statement from the Moldovan presidency.

The visit follows the recent swearing-in of Moldova’s new government, led by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, after Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity secured a parliamentary majority in late September.

In the lead-up to the elections, Sandu had raised concerns about Russian interference, claiming in July that Russia was “investing in multiple political vehicles” to influence the country’s legislature.
